Who are Watermans?
A UK based company situated in Yorkshire, Watermans are a family run business initially incorporated in 2012 but launching globally in 2016.
The company was started by husband and wife team, Gail and Matt Waterman who both began to suffer from different forms of hair loss and hair thinning.
For Matt, the problem stemmed from male pattern baldness associated with high levels of dihydrotestosterone. Gail, with her mixed race heritage, on the other hand was beginning to develop thinning and brittle hair. Unable to find an adequate all in one solution to suit their needs, the pair decided to develop their own product.
Not as far-fetched as it sounds, the duo had over 26 years of experience in the hair industry and were keen to put their knowledge to good use to create a product that treated underlying scalp conditions as well as promote healthy hair re-growth.
In their years of dealing with different hair types they had seen many caffeine based formulas that had varying degrees of success and the aim was to blend something that the market hadn’t seen before; something that was compatible for all hair types irrespective of age, race and hormone irregularity.
After two years of experimenting with formulas, the Watermans finally hit on a combination of ingredients that produced pleasing and consistent results. After finding a factory to mass produce their blend, the company has been building on this initial success having found a receptive international market for its products.
The Watermans Formula
Though, for obvious reasons, the exact formula is a closely guarded secret, the Watermans range of products contains some essential ingredients with some variations depending on the product you buy.
Designed to be used by both men and women, the Watermans shampoo can be used for both hormone imbalances as well as general scalp conditions including those that are undiagnosed.
The formula has been created to stimulate regrowth, prevent hair loss and to repair damage. The mix of ingredients has been specifically chosen due to their inherent properties known to stimulate cell metabolism including oxygenating the follicles, naturally blocking DHT and improving vascularisation. The result is faster regrowth, thicker and fuller hair and stronger follicles to prevent thinning.
The formula is ph-balanced and is free from sulfates and parabens.
Designed to be used on wet hair, it is recommended that the shampoo is left to activate for 2-3 minutes before being rinsed off.
The active ingredients of Watermans shampoo include:
- Argan oil
- Rosemary extract
- Anageline (hydrolysed lupin protein)
Designed to complement the use of their shampoo, the conditioner has been formulated to soften and moisturize the hair and scalp and to improve circulation. Using the shampoo is reported to naturally regulate hormones in the hair follicles and strengthen existing hair. As well as caffeine, rosemary and anageline the conditioner also contains cholesterol.
Regrowth Hair Serum
Perhaps a marketing ploy to sell more products or a useful way to keep up with a regular regime between washes, Watermans has produced this daily use serum.
Containing active ingredients that are designed to keep hair healthy, the formula is a combination blended for nourishment and strength building.
Available to buy as a one off purchase or as an automatically fulfilled subscription sent at intervals, Watermans also supplies its own range of blended vitamins.
Designed to treat deficiencies that can cause hair loss, these vitamins are a mix of common nutrients that are known for their importance in building healthy hair. Though not a magic formula, it is suggested that regular use of these vitamins over the course of 2-3 months can help improve healthy hair growth.
The formula uses a range of active ingredients to provide a blend of essential nutrients known for their positive effect on healthy hair growth.
A foundation for healthy skin, nails and hair, biotin is an essential ingredient to boost new hair regrowth and improve the appearance of new growth.
Used for its ability to regenerate dormant cells, marine collagen is obtained from fish protein and is useful to promote new hair growth in men and women who have or are suffering from alopecia.
MSM is a fundamental ingredient of new hair growth.
Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens)
Renowned for its ability to balance DHT levels in both men and women, saw palmetto can work to restore hormone imbalances that can cause androgenic alopecia and female pattern baldness.
Selenium has antifungal properties that can help treat some scalp conditions but is also an important element of the glutathione antioxidant. A deficiency in selenium can cause weak and brittle hair so it is key for healthy and strong hair.
Used as a stimulant for hair regrowth, ashwagandha also works to reduce stress hormones in the body, restoring balance as well as protecting cells against premature decay. This potent herb has also been reported to reduce early signs of aging by preventing graying of the hair.
Silica is an important transportation nutrient for other vitamins and minerals and has long been recognized as a cornerstone for healthy hair, nails and skin.
Another important building block for healthy hair is calcium. Whilst this essential mineral alone won’t cause instant hair regrowth, a deficiency can affect hair loss.
Rhodiola rosea extract
Rich with phenolic acid, rhodiola rosea is an ingredient designed to help restore hormones by acting to reduce cortisol (or stress) levels.
You don’t have to be anemic for it to affect your hair growth but iron is an important element for hair nutrition. Low levels of iron can cause hair loss.
What’s the 411? Does Watermans Work?
There are a range of independent reviews available online through a number of sources including Amazon, Google and Judge Me. Overall, the anecdotal evidence of these reviews is very positive with most reviewers being satisfied with the claims made by the products.
Judge Me has over 700 reviews with an overall positive rating of five out of five stars. The vast majority of reviews are from verified users and the overriding sentiment is one of modest expectations but with pleasing results.
Amazon reviews vary a little more with far less reviews available to choose from. However, the ratings for the product range are in the region of four out of five stars with critical reviews commenting on how dry the shampoo leaves your hair feeling. It is not clear whether these users were combining the conditioner as well.
There are over 100 reviews on Google with the overall product rating being 4.4 out of 5 stars. Critical reviews include some comments about the condition of the hair after using it with some users finding hair to be greasy or frizzy after use.
A small number of people have commented that the shampoo doesn’t work to a lather that well but this could be due to hard water vs soft water.
Overall, the consensus of opinion with Watermans is that it has some positive benefits for helping healthy hair growth.
Whilst it doesn’t purport to be a miracle cure, the active ingredients are from a proven arsenal of factors which can certainly help combat hair loss as well as prevent some underlying scalp conditions.
Used in combination with a healthy diet (or through supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals) both the shampoo and conditioner could help many people suffering from thinning hair or hair loss.
Though there will be people for whom this particular product doesn’t work, you should always remember that one size doesn’t fit all. Watermans shampoo and conditioner is not a silver bullet but definitely has the potential to help with hair loss for many people. At $20-$30 for a combo pack, it certainly won’t break the bank to try it.
